Abstract

Rossini, Bellini, and Donizetti decisively shaped the art of bel canto, placing the pure and flexible melodic line at the center of vocal expression. Their technical demands raised the level of virtuosity, requiring refined breath control, smooth legato, and sophisticated ornamentation. Rossini enhanced vocal agility by introducing increasingly elaborate coloratura passages. Bellini emphasized lyrical expression, creating long phrases and deeply emotional melodies. Donizetti combined virtuosity with dramatic intensity, bringing bel canto closer to Romantic sensibilities. Through these contributions, solo roles became more complex and demanding. Their influence defined the ideal nineteenth-century opera singer, uniting technical mastery with expressive depth.
